Built in the mid-1930s, the original Arts and Crafts influenced house had been unsympathetically extended over the years, resulting in the primary living spaces becoming disconnected from the beautiful west facing garden. The new design sought to (i) remove the existing single storey non-original extensions; (ii) construct a new 2 storey structure to provide brighter living spaces with direct access and restored visual connections throughout to the garden; (iii) provide additional bedroom space at first floor level and (iv) sensitively remodel the internal layout of the original structure to improve the spatial connection between old and new.   

 

The new L-shaped extension is laid out around a fully glazed internal courtyard space, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the plan of the new extension as well as to the rear of the original house.  At the ground floor, a full-height glazed wall stretching 7.5m long frames the view of the garden with 2 sets of sliding doors allowing the new kitchen/dining/living family space to open out fully into the garden.  The remodelling of the new stair configuration creates a new circulation spine where the garden is immediately visible upon entering the new double height entrance space.
