The Mount Merrion House Stables Building was constructed as part of the Mount Merrion country house estate developed by the Fitzwilliam family during the early 18th century.  Of the original estate, only the external walls to the main part of the original 60m long U-shaped stable block and its roof structure survived along with the attractive stone wall of the adjoining house which formed the north wing.

The initial brief sought to convert the existing Stables structure to 7 no. generous residential units and replace the existing single storey structure along the east side of the site with a new 2 storey residential block containing 3 no. residential units.  Between the structures, a new landscaped central courtyard houses provides public open space as well as vehicular and bicycle parking.

The proposed new building and landscaped courtyard are designed to respect the historic form and setting. The new houses are subservient to the protected structure, combining with the existing stable building to create a pleasant, semi-private shared courtyard space, the overall design of which is generated from a study of the cultural heritage of the place.  As an extension to this design strategy, original materials such as render and timber are re-used but in a distinct and contemporary manner to clearly distinguish old and new.
